A Lalor home is usually a whole family house to move. Most of Lalor was built after the Second World War, when ex-servicemen formed the Peter Lalor Home Building Co-operative Society and built a garden suburb east of today’s station, designed by the town planner Saxil Tuxen. Parts of the Peter Lalor Estate are now heritage listed, and several streets are named after Second World War leaders. Lalor is in the City of Whittlesea, between Darebin Creek and Merri Creek, with the Hume Freeway along its western side.

Long-held homes and downsizing
Lalor has more older residents than the City of Whittlesea as a whole: 13.9% are 70 or over, against 8.9% across the city, and close to four in ten homes are owned outright. Whittlesea bins and hard rubbish
Moving out? Book any hard rubbish as early as you can, so it’s collected before you leave: Whittlesea says the wait can be several weeks. Households can book up to two collections a financial year. What you put out must fit within 3 cubic metres, and it goes on the nature strip no earlier than the night before.
Leave your bins for the next occupants: the council says it’s illegal to remove council bins from a property. Moving into a Whittlesea home with no bins? Order them online, show the house number on the letterbox or the front of the building, and allow three to five business days. In a unit, ask the body corporate first.
