Melbourne to Sydney removalists

A dedicated truck that carries your household and nothing else, loaded in Melbourne and unloaded in Sydney by the same crew. One fixed price, agreed before the move.

Why Moving Folks

One truck, one crew, all the way to Sydney

Some interstate movers share one truck between several customers’ jobs. We don’t. On your Melbourne to Sydney move, the truck carries your household and nothing else. We load your job and leave straight for the unload. No other customers’ jobs are added on the way, so there are no detours, no waiting days and no hotel nights spent waiting for your furniture. Delivery takes as long as the drive to Sydney, and we can share the truck’s live location while it’s on the road.

Moving Folks is owner-operated, and the owner loads every job personally, with care and precision. The crew that loads your furniture in Melbourne is the crew that unloads it in Sydney, so one team is responsible from start to finish. Our interstate truck is a 12-tonne truck with about 48 cubic metres of space, and a typical full house fits comfortably. To price your move, we can come out and check your furniture and the access, or work from photos of your furniture and both full addresses, then give you one fixed price.

The road from Melbourne to Sydney

RACV puts the Hume Highway route from Melbourne to Sydney via Albury at around 872 km. Transport for NSW completed the duplication of the Hume in 2013, when the Holbrook bypass opened, making it a four-lane dual carriageway highway. It says it is continuously maintaining or upgrading sections between Sydney and Albury, so if you’re driving up yourself, plan your trip with the Live Traffic NSW app.

One crew from your Melbourne door to your Sydney door

We don’t send one person with the truck and hire casual helpers for a few hours at the other end. The crew that loads is the crew that unloads, so if an insurance claim is ever needed, there’s no argument over who handled what. We’ll share all our insurance documents, and we suggest you ask any removalist for theirs before you book. You can look us up by the name MovingFolks on Google, Facebook, hipages and ServiceSeeking and read our reviews.

If your Sydney place isn’t ready yet

If your Sydney lease or settlement starts a couple of days after you leave Melbourne, we can organise storage for a couple of days before delivery, as we have a few trucks. Tell us about access at the Sydney end too, such as stairs, driveways and where a truck can park. Dismantling and reassembly of furniture is available on request and quoted separately, and we supply moving boxes at a good price.

Settling into Sydney

Service NSW says that once you’ve moved to NSW, you can only drive on your interstate licence for 3 months, then you need to apply at a Service NSW Centre to transfer it. It also says you need to register your vehicle in NSW: a vehicle kept or garaged in NSW without NSW registration is treated as unregistered. And the Australian Electoral Commission asks you to update your enrolment when your details change, or you could be removed from the roll.

Good to know

Moving questions, answered.

How far is Melbourne to Sydney by road?
Around 870 km. RACV puts the Hume Highway trip from Melbourne to Sydney via Albury at around 872 km, and Transport for NSW says the Hume became a four-lane dual carriageway when the Holbrook bypass opened in August 2013. Because your move is dedicated, delivery takes as long as that drive, and we can share the truck’s live location so you can follow your furniture to Sydney.
Will my furniture share the truck with other people’s jobs?
No. We only do dedicated jobs, so the truck carries your household and nothing else. We load your job and leave straight for the unload in Sydney. No other customers’ jobs are added on the way, so there are no detours and no hotel nights spent waiting for your furniture.
How do I get a fixed price for my move to Sydney?
If you’re moving from Melbourne, it’s your choice: we come out to check all your furniture and the access, or you send photos of your furniture and both full addresses. If you’re moving from Sydney to Melbourne, we quote from photos of your furniture and both full addresses. You get one fixed price, agreed before the move, either way. Dismantling and reassembly can be added on request and is quoted separately.
Do you also move from Sydney to Melbourne?
Yes. We move households from Sydney and anywhere in New South Wales to Melbourne and anywhere in Victoria, as a dedicated full truckload only, so the truck carries your things and nobody else’s. We price those moves from photos of your furniture and both full addresses.
How long can I drive in NSW on my Victorian licence?
Service NSW says that once you’ve moved to NSW, you can only drive on an interstate licence for 3 months. After that you need to visit a Service NSW Centre and apply to transfer it to a NSW driver licence. Interstate checks are sometimes needed, so allow plenty of time for the transfer.
Do I need to register my car in NSW?
Yes. Service NSW says that if you’ve moved to NSW, you need to register your vehicle there. You apply at a Service NSW Centre with documents including proof of identity, CTP insurance and a blue slip inspection report issued no more than 42 days before. You’ll get a receipt to take to the Victorian registration authority if you’re eligible for a rego refund.
Can I bring my pot plants to Sydney?
Check before you pack them. The Australian Interstate Quarantine website says there are restrictions on household potted plants, including fruit trees, when you move interstate, because soil can carry pests and diseases, and most states don’t allow pot plants to be moved. Call its hotline on 1800 084 881 to find out what you can take.
